“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish but inside, they are full of greed and self-indulgence…” Matt 23:25 (NIV)
Art Linklater once asked a boy on his television show what the definition of a hypocrite was. Without hesitation, the boy answered, “A guy who hates hippies!”
Jesus calls it like it is. He didn’t pull His punches or worry about being politically correct. To those standing around who had the ears to hear, listen and understand, Christ spoke the truth, pure and simple. For those on the receiving end, they learned to hate him real quick! For those who understood the message, they got the point:
CHOOSE YOUR TEACHERS CAREFULLY!
It isn’t any different today. There are so many influences and attempts to monopolize our attention by a bewildering array of media, advertisers, game shows, cults, fanatics and special interests. We become so pushed, pulled, prodded and probed that we eventually just shut it all out.
Yet the one True Voice still rings clear and commanding if we would tune in. The Teacher has the Truth. Our Savior cares when no one else does. We just have to choose the right teacher and listen.
Do you know who you’re listening to?
I sure hope so!
Steve
