“How do you make God smile??” (young African girl)

I was helping a small group of African kids with their Christmas preparations. We were having fun and suddenly this question was asked. For a moment, I was a little startled, not knowing what the girl wanted clarified. I smiled as she stared into my face.

“Do the faith things!” she said softly before I could reply.

I supposed I could’ve had a pretty good Biblical text for her or maybe even a bit of sage advice from a Bible teacher but for that moment with those kids, it was the perfect answer.

My father, Al Zimmerman, died last Saturday. He had been a missionary in Africa for over thirty years. Even when he “retired”, he still taught Bible classes in the local church and to a group of elderly people in the apartment complex where he lived. Dad was 85.

I’d like to think that he made God smile when they met. I’d like to think that I would also make God smile when I also meet him. I’d like to think that you, too, would find God smiling when you meet Him, too.

Just do the faith things, okay!

Steve
