“I was very happy to find out about some of your children. They are following the Way of Truth, just as the Father told us.” II John 4 (Simple English Bible)

Sometimes reading the Word can cut deep and hurt terribly. Any Christian who is a parent wants their children to grow up in the Lord. Not only do we bear them, love them and nurture them, we also want them to develop a spiritual dimension.

I suppose if you had to add up all the time, money and effort to raise a baby into adulthood, the cost would be over a quarter million dollars, perhaps more. With schooling, clothes, college and all the attendant activities, this is an expensive twenty year commitment to one human being.

And if the physical resources are this expensive, you’d think that parents would also spend as much or more on their child’s education, nourishment and commitment to their spiritual beings. Teaching the Word at home, praying with them, guiding them into works of excellent for Christ and lifting them up when their fall must be essentials for this process, don’t you think?

One of my sons isn’t spiritually committed. He calls himself a Christian in the very loosest sense of the word. But I know he is far from God. This hurts me. As much as I’d dearly like to make the choices for him, I cannot.

John writes this letter of encouragement of many Christians. He is so pleased that the next generation is just as committed to God’s truth as they were.

What a stunning testament to those parents!

Steve
