“Love is forever…” I Cor 13:8 (Simple English Bible)
I recently read a horrific statistic, whether it is actually true or not, I don’t know. It was concerning the divorce rate in South Africa, which supposedly stands at 50%. Half of all marriages end in divorce? Could this possibly be true? I have no idea but it certainly seems to be leaning that way. I often wonder about a couple standing before a minister, taking their vows before God. They promise each other to love and cherish no matter what. Somewhere, between that time and the divorce, something ran off the rails.
Yet, we read in Paul’s letter to the Christians in Corinth that God’s love lasts forever! That means, from the time we accepted Christ and obeyed the gospel in the waters of baptism, until this very moment, the love of God covers our lives. And it will do so tomorrow. Next week. Next year and the next hundred years if the Lord tarries. In fact, God’s love will last right through the temporal into eternity.
Human love might fail. Promises we make to one another might fail. Human wisdom might fail us.
Only God’s love is forever.
And ever.
And ever.
And ever…
Steve
