Meeting At Bavumeleni Children’s Center

July 5th

A meeting was called to discuss new developments at the Childrens Center. Present were Reinaldo and Lorna, Primose and Victor, Godfrey and Euphonia, Doreen and Steve.

1. Lorna Rutter had handed in her resignation at the Kenridge Pre-school in order to develop crafts and concentrate on her skills. She wants to spend time at BCC to encourage the workers and kids.

2. The work has been completed at BCC to enlarge and repair the rooms and facilities. Rooms have been paneled and painted, the driveway has been concreted and an awning installed. It was hard work but well organized by many. Our thanks to all those who pitched in to help.

3. A 40′ Container was donated to BCC by a shipping company and delivered within a week. It was sited across the street from the house and will serve as a storage unit — hopefully, a number of wooden pallets will be donated so that the wood can be used to build shelves. A fence has been erected around the container and the small structure next door.

4. The day care facility, operated by Ephonia and helpers, was closed by the local authority. Two other centers nearby were also closed because of the deaths of two children. The inspectors were happy with the new facilities at BCC and had no complaints but decided to close down all day care centers in the area for safety. It isn’t known when the local authority will approve of re-opening them.

5. Godfrey and Euphonia will be relocating to Secunda in the northern Transvaal (Mpumalanga Province). Godfrey was offered a permanent position there plus a post in a church. It will mean a better financial base for them and Faith. They intend to leave during the latter half of July.

6. Since many feeding schemes have sprung up in the nearby areas, there are less children visiting BCC. However, there are more adults in desperate straits who have come for food, too.

7. Marty and Lorna want to concentrate on developing skills in crafts, computer literacy and spiritual teaching at BCC — all of which are needed. (There is now a secure room where Marty can set up the computers.)

Another meeting will be held during August to assess these new developments and make plans accordingly.
