“When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free.” Edward Gibbons
I get a little frustrationed when society tail spins into individual freedoms to the extend of losing sight of responsibility and concern for others. Yes, I do enjoy my individuality and the ability to make my own choices but there is a frightening trend to uphold the rights of people who couldn’t care less about others as long as they can get their way. These folks not only want their own personal freedoms ahead of anyone else’s but also demand that others are not worthy of the same ideals.
Even in churches, this trend can be seen. Christians take offense and feel slighted, making demands that the situation be rectified or they will go elsewhere. Cliques form and those less worthy or desirable are left out in the cold to sort out their own fellowship with others. Leaders make unilateral decisions for their own good and neglect the least important ones in the congregation.
Jesus touched prostitutes, the lame, the sick and the helpless. He reached out to them in their greatest hour of need. His compassion was evident in every situation, even when He was angry or being challenged. Our only freedom is the freedom to serve Him wherever He leads and whatever He requires.
It’s the only true freedom I know!
