Lighthouses!

“Run away from evil desires which some young people have. Follow righteousness, faith, love and peace. Do this with people who trust in the Lord with a pure heart.” II Tim 2:22 (Simple English Bible)

I suppose it is the lofty heights of age when older folks look down at their lives and warn young people about the dangers of life. I know that I resented my Dad and others who spoke, “When I was your age…!” and proceeded to outline what had happened 3 decades previously. Now I find myself in a similar position — three sons and two grandsons, one more grandchild on the way. But my advice is tempered by one fact: I too have the same desires of the flesh as any young person has! Just because I am older doesn’t mean that I am any less tempted!

Paul’s advice was simple to the young pastor, Timothy: get out of Dodge! Stay away from what you know is sinful, evil and distracting. Later, Paul wrote that Timothy shouldn’t waste time in arguments and fights. The more time spent on arguing the toss, the less time there was to teach Christ. Instead, Christians should follow this advice: follow what is right! Take encouragement from others of like mind. Stay the course, keep the faith.

In today’s world, nothing is certain anymore. Each value system has been beaten, bent and twisted to suit anyone’s desire. But we are people of Truth, pure and simple. Our faith reveals this Truth and the Light of the World!

Be that lighthouse!

Steve
